WORLD RECORD — AETHON PRIME

Sixty thousand light-years from everything that went wrong.

Aethon Prime. A world nobody terraformed. A colony 16 years old and still becoming itself. The most ambitious thing humanity has ever attempted — and the first time it has tried to do it right.

THE VELANTHRA GATE

Eleven days. Sixty thousand light-years. Zero losses.

The Gate is built beneath the Cheshire Basin in England. It translates mass across sixty thousand light-years via a mechanism Alpha Horizon's physicists call a controlled exploitation of spacetime topology, and that everyone else calls the thing we still don't entirely understand but works every time.

Passengers travel in cryo-sleep. Eleven days of subjective time. Six weeks from the outside. The Gate has made over two hundred successful transits. No losses. The queue on Earth currently stands at 4.3 million applications.

Alpha Horizon built it. Alpha Horizon operates it. What you do with that fact depends on who you ask.

TRANSIT FACTS
Transit time 11 days subjective / 6 weeks external
Earth departure Alsager, Cheshire — The Threshold
Aethon arrival Velanthra Port, Solace Bay
Transits completed 200+ — zero losses
Annual throughput 75,000–90,000 departures
Queue depth 4.3 million applications
THE PLANET

It doesn't look real from orbit. From the ground, it doesn't feel it either.

Aethon Prime is the first world classified as Tier One Habitable without terraforming. No preparation required. No domes. The air is breathable. The water is clean. Nothing hunts you at night.

The Light

Vel, the star, runs warm gold — amber spectrum, lower UV. The world looks permanently caught in late afternoon. Settlers from cold grey climates describe it as the most generous thing about the planet. Settlers from hot climates call it the most alien.

The Bioluminescence

The ocean glows. Not from cities — from the Aethon Lumin Complex, a microorganism network that permeates the upper ocean layer. At peak conditions it produces enough light to read by from a clifftop 200 metres above the water. The footage didn't prepare anyone.

The Gravity

0.83g. You feel lighter. Movement has a particular quality — not floaty, but rested, as though carrying a body that weighs slightly less than it should. Children born here are taller than their Earth-origin parents. They are already something slightly different.

The Moons

Solen — larger, amber-gold, western rise. Mariva — smaller, silver-blue, eastern rise. When both are full simultaneously — the Full Double — the sky holds two light qualities at once. It has become the closest thing Aethon Prime has to a universal celebration.

No Apex Predators

You can walk the Velgrass Plains at night and nothing will hunt you. You can take your children to the river. You can sleep in a tent in the Cinderback foothills without a perimeter fence. Early settlers found this unsettling. It mostly stops feeling wrong after the first year.

The Velgrass

Two-metre silver stalks across the northern plains, bioluminescent at dusk. The Shivers — six-legged herd animals with iridescent markings — migrate through them each season. Farmers stop work to watch the herds pass. Some things override the schedule.

THE CONTINENTS
Aurenveld
The Great Western Continent

The largest landmass and the administrative heart. The Cinderback Range runs its spine — 2,400 kilometres of dark basalt and pale quartzite, peaks reaching 4,200 metres. Behind it: the Solace Basin, where the city sits. The Velgrass Plains to the north. The dramatic fjord-cut Coastal Reach to the west, where the bioluminescent sea breaks against black sea-stacks.

Solveth
The Eastern Continent

Older, deeper, mostly unmapped. The Deeptrees — 40 to 60 metres at maturity, burgundy-silver canopy — cover 70% of the interior. Their root systems form a fungal network whose nature is still uncharacterised. Two small settlements. The eastern coast has the most intense bioluminescence on the planet, visible for kilometres inland on moonless nights.

The Quiet
The Southern Continent

No permanent human settlements. Partly glaciated. The polar auroras here — columns of violet and pale green from Aethon Prime's magnetic field — are the strangest thing on the planet by most accounts. The Assembly has been pressing for formal conservation status for three years. The question is unresolved.

SOLACE CITY

The first city humanity built on a world it was not born on.

It sits in the Solace Basin — a broad sheltered valley on the eastern slope of the Cinderback Range. Protected from coastal weather. River-fed from the mountain snowmelt. Amber light, all day. New arrivals describe it as late afternoon that never quite becomes evening.

Foresight Urban designed it on a founding principle: a city people choose to be in, not a settlement they were assigned to. The park was planted before the buildings around it. The waterfront was protected before developers could argue. Streets were made wide enough to gather in.

Whether the principle survives the pressure of 75,000 to 90,000 new arrivals every year is the central civic argument of 3026.

TIMELINE

How the colony came to be

2966

Alpha Horizon founded by Dr Helena Voss — AI research and compute infrastructure. The Gate remains theoretical.

2986

Gate construction begins at the Cheshire Basin, Alsager, England. Classified. Dr Yuen Fang-Li's threading theory licensed. The queue has not yet formed.

12 Apr 3000

The Velanthra probe transits. Eleven days later, confirmation arrives: oxygen 21.3%, gravity 0.83g, bioluminescent oceans, no apex predators. Alpha Horizon goes public. The queue begins forming.

17 Mar 3010

Founding Generation departs Earth — 100 crew, one-way. ISV Vanguard. First humans to leave the solar system.

28 Mar 3010

Founding Generation arrives. Dr Fatima Al-Hassan leads the first surface party onto Aethon Prime. Far Gate construction begins.

Mid-3014

Far Gate operational. Gate declared open. Chris Edwards: 'Gate declared operational. Open it.' Founding Generation moves planetside.

3019

Pioneer Programme opens — first civilian transit waves depart The Threshold, Alsager. The queue starts moving.

3022

The Velanthra Accord signed at The Canopy, Solace Bay. Velanthra Assembly constituted. Archer transferred to Assembly ownership.

3026

240,000 settlers across the Velanthra system. 4.3 million in the queue on Earth. The colony is 16 years old and still becoming itself.
